    19 Jan 2012 | 9:32 pm
This afternoon the Geelong Football Club held at a press conference at Skilled Stadium at 2.30pm, to announce their new captain and leadership group for 2012. The new captain of Geelong is Joel Selwood, who will be replacing former skipper Cameron Ling, who retired after Geelong’s premeiership last year. 24 Nov 2011 | 2:20 am
Every year we seem to say this but the worst kept secret in AFL is finally out in the open as Jonathan Patton was selected first in the 2011 AFL Draft. Patton is easily the most dominant forward who will get selected from the 2011 draft. Some of the attributes that saw him picked first are as follows: His good hands/judgement His consistent goal kicking For a big man he is great at ground level Fast and fit for a key forward Times his leads as well as anyone GWS should be able to build a forward line around Patton and he is a deserved number 1 pick.

For most of those of us writing about football, the euphoria of being named on an AFL list, even as a rookie, can only be guessed at. AussieRulesBlog is staggered by a report in The Age of a punter wagering $18,000 on the Sydney Swans missing the final eight in 2012. Let’s not beat around the bush — this issue of gambling on AFL is becoming a more and more significant one.   We’re not wowsers here at AussieRulesBlog Central, but the punt simply isn’t one of our vices. The controversy of the first day of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG is only a controversy because Channel Nein insisted on deploying its technology despite it not being available to either teams or umpires.   Test cricket has survived for more than 100 years without high technology assistance. Sure, there were dodgy decisions from time to time, but that was part and parcel of the process.

Because he’s Kermit! Or at least, that’s what his teammates call him, due to being green-vested so regularly over his debut year. Gaff showed us last year that he will be a fantastic fantasy player for years to come, but, due to the sub rule, his first year numbers don’t really reflect that at a glance. On the surface, his season average of 65.3 doesn’t appear so promising. Looking…

It appears that just 13 games in 2010 was all it took for Fremantle’s Michael Barlow to drastically change the approach football managers take to AFL draft. For those not familiar with the Barlow story. Michael Barlow was rookie listed by Fremantle after previously trying out for St Kilda and Essendon. Barlow didn’t play TAC Cup as a junior skipping the traditional “talent identification pathway” to play country football. In 2008/9 Barlow played in the VFL for Werribee where he was awarded the Fothergill-Round Medal as the league’s best young player and was runner up in the JJ…

With the generous bestowal of MID/FWD DPP in 2012, these two gents will be among the most popular forward line options for coaches. Effectively having an additional midfielder sitting in your forward line; this appears to be a recipe for success for coaches in the upcoming season. Poised at a similar price with high potential, Robbo and Martin may well be fighting it out in your team for that all important DPP spot. Many will opt for both; or may be considering others like Sidebottom, Beams, Fyfe or Zaharakis. However, it is my belief that these two offer the most upside in what will…

Forgive me if I think this is Groundhog Day.  The crowd today look like the leftovers from yesterday. There is a distinctive sign that says “hangover” amongst most of them. It was a big day on Australia Day and I don’t think many of them would remember what happened yesterday. For me personally I [...]

  • Starling to become a Swan

    24 Jan 2012 | 8:20 pm
Talented US college basketballer Alex Starling has been signed by the Sydney Swans after testing showed he had the athletic potential to make the switch to the AFL. Starling, 22, is finishing college in Florida but will make several visits to Sydney this year to meet with Swans’ coaching staff and develop his football skills. He has been signed under the AFL’s International Scholarship Scheme, which will allow him to both train with the Swans and complete his four year degree at Bethune-Cookman University. If things progress as planned, he will be recruited to the Swans’…
  • Schwass says the AFL should get into New Zealand

    21 Jan 2012 | 5:33 am
Former North Melbourne star Wayne Schwass says in the Herald Sun that New Zealand can develop into a strong AFL breeding ground and wants to see a match played across the Tasman for premiership points. AFL New Zealand continues to push the league for a home-and-away match to be played in the country as early as next year, with Anzac Day suggested as a potential date. Schwass who was born in New Zealand backed taking a game across the Tasman. "We are into Tasmania, the AFL are exploring China, and I understand that from a commercial point of view, but New Zealand is three hours across the…

  • Warrington Wolves train with Sydney Swans

    19 Jan 2012 | 5:27 pm
The English rugby league team Warrington Wolves this week continued the long tradition of football teams cross-training with other codes in the off season when they joined the Sydney Swans in Sydney for a skill and fitness session. Canadian Mike Pyke can be seen in the background of the Fox Sports video below and looks like he might rightly be as comfortable with the Rugby League players as with the Swans or his former code of Rugby Union.   ...

It about the Tennis Federation curtailed GRUNTERS. Watched 3 minutes of the Gruntapova match last night before turning the TV off the tennis. Came back about 9.15pm only to hear it again. Channel 7 said it was over 90db. Shut them up or ban them. I didn't come back to watch Hewitt. What we need is spectators complaining about lack of Occupational Safety to them.

  • Bobby Dazzler FC - Pre-season News!!!

    Bobby Dazzler
    6 Jan 2012 | 3:49 am
Training has resumed down at "Dazzler Park" as the Bobby Dazzler FC sets its self for a massive 2012 season. Approximately 150 players have been invited down to training to battle it out for 30 spots so the competition is pretty hot. The initial squad of 30 players has already been selected, but as per normal I would imagine nearly every name will change come the start of the season. At the momment we have 566K left in the salary cap so theres plenty of room for movement. Off my initial squad here's a small insight: In the backline Goddard @ 584.7K looks destined to lead the defense…
