This afternoon the Geelong Football Club held at a press conference at Skilled Stadium at 2.30pm, to announce their new captain and leadership group for 2012. The new captain of Geelong is Joel Selwood, who will be replacing former skipper Cameron Ling, who retired after Geelong’s premeiership last year. Every year we seem to say this but the worst kept secret in AFL is finally out in the open as Jonathan Patton was selected first in the 2011 AFL Draft. Patton is easily the most dominant forward who will get selected from the 2011 draft. Some of the attributes that saw him picked first are as follows: His good hands/judgement His consistent goal kicking For a big man he is great at ground level Fast and fit for a key forward Times his leads as well as anyone GWS should be able to build a forward line around Patton and he is a deserved number 1 pick.

The bye rounds (11, 12 and 13) are fast approaching, and it’s time to start asking yourself how you’ll go about tackling them. Hawthorn defeat Melbourne  Melbourne  6.13 (49)   vs Hawthorn  15.25 (115) Next Round: Sydney v  Melbourne, Hawthorn v Fremantle It was to be expected the Hawks crushing the Dees but a continuing sticking point for Hawthorn is their wastefulness in front of goals. Buddy Franklin personified this with his 3 goals 7 points and talent alone cannot get the Hawks over the line. Liam Shiels was the Hawk’s best and Sam Mitchell battled hard all game. Mitch Clarke kicked 3 goals for Melbourne, but time and time again the Demons really struggled to penetrate into their forward 50.

Let’s not beat around the bush. Brett Ratten’s whining about Sam Lonergan’s “drive” tackle has presumably provided some less-principled Blues supporters with some sort of de facto justification for their tweeted threats against Lonergan.   AussieRulesBlog understands that coaches are emotional after a game, particularly a loss when a win was presumed. Nevertheless, in the world of instant

  • Winderlich update

    Danielle
    15 May 2012 | 1:29 am
Bomber Jason Winderlich has endured a difficult road to recovery over the past twelve months after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in round four of the 2011 home and away season.  Winderlich played one match this year during the NAB Cup, but is now in the process of recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained last month. This latest setback is expected to delay his return for an additional four to six weeks. Essendon is adamant they will not rush Winderlich back into the side until his body is ready, despite the fact that his progress has been slower than expected. Working with…

    15 May 2012 | 1:28 am
Bulldog Adam Cooney was missing from the midfield last weekend against the Kangaroos after experiencing swelling in his knee late last week. Unfortunately, he is expected to miss another match when the Dogs meet the Suns in the Round Eight clash this weekend. As his recovery continues, the club hopes resting him another week will mean he is fit to return next week against the Cats. While his teammates make the journey to Darwin for the match on Sunday, Cooney will undergo treatment to reduce the swelling. However, he won’t be the only Bulldog spending this weekend in the sidelines. Tom…
  • Walker gets two weeks for tackle

    Danielle
    15 May 2012 | 1:28 am
Crow Taylor Walker has received a two match ban for a sling-tackle on Cat Harry Taylor during Adelaide’s fifty point win over Geelong on Saturday afternoon. Although the Geelong Football Club didn’t believe the tackle was of medium impact, it chose not to appeal the decision. If unsuccessful, Walker could have faced a harsher penalty of three weeks and the Cats were not willing to take the risk. Meanwhile, teammate Joel Corey was hit with a $900 sanction. Corey has accepted the fine as punishment for an obscene gesture he made during the match on Saturday.

On Thursday night Jimmy Bartel was named as a certain starter for the Cats when they meet the Crows on Saturday, after sustaining an ankle injury last weekend. However, it was announced today that Bartel is a late withdrawal from the Geelong team. The Cats have named emergency players as Shannon Byrnes, Tom Gillies, and George Horlin-Smith, with one of them expected to take Bartel’s place. Sam Fisher was selected in the Saints team to play against the Blues on Monday afternoon. Fisher has been recovering from a hamstring injury from last weekend. Today St Kilda made a decision that it…

Ablett is likely to play in the forward-line for the Suns giving his teammates a chance to enhance their performance in the midfield. Ablett has missed the last two games due to a knee injury, but will be a welcome addition to the Sun’s line-up against Greater Western Sydney in Canberra. David Swallow didn’t training on Wednesday, however he made up for it this morning and is set to return after recovering from an ankle…

Beasts From The East Update   In 1991 I received a phone call from my Under 16’s Cricket coach.  “Stuey, its Crackers here mate.  Adam and Luke (our two gun players) have been suspended at school and can’t play tomorrow.  I need you to open the batting and bowling tomorrow.”  Holy sh*t, this was my first experience with pressure. Winning the toss was my peak performance for the day.  Padding up I started getting what I thought were butterflies.  A solid if not fluent Number 7 bat, my day usually consisted of 6 steamed dim-sims, a pie with sauce and two orange Lucozades…

Welcome once again to the Best Buys This week sees a fair few rookie options on the bubble, and for those who resisted the double-downgrade last week, some decent opportunites to get in some fresh meat. Defense in particular has a few guys worth looking at, which with some of the defensive cash-cows already getting close to their peak it is perfectly timed. For those that did opt for the double-downgrade this week sees the ideal time to bring a couple of heavy-hitters to replenish the premium stocks and hopefully get that nice points boost that we’re all looking for. COULTA COULDABEENS 1243 Def TARWIN LOWER PIGS 1132 There was something of a snafu with the team lists, but nothing snafuish about the Couldabeens performance; Coulta defeating Tarwin Lower by an awesome 111 points (I like palindromic numbers). Zaharakis (130) and Reilly (120) played well in demolitions, and the Port Adelaide midfield duo of Ebert (109) and McCarthy (105) lifted for their fantasy coach when their teammates could not.
