The new captain of Geelong is Joel Selwood, who will be replacing former skipper Cameron Ling, who retired after Geelong’s premeiership last year. Jonathan Patton – Number 1 Draft Pick 2011
24 Nov 2011 | 2:20 amEvery year we seem to say this but the worst kept secret in AFL is finally out in the open as Jonathan Patton was selected first in the 2011 AFL Draft. Patton is easily the most dominant forward who will get selected from the 2011 draft. Some of the attributes that saw him picked first are as follows: His good hands/judgement His consistent goal kicking For a big man he is great at ground level Fast and fit for a key forward Times his leads as well as anyone GWS should be able to build a forward line around Patton and he is a deserved number 1 pick. -

Peaks and troughs
17 Jan 2012 | 12:49 amFor most of those of us writing about football, the euphoria of being named on an AFL list, even as a rookie, can only be guessed at. To succeed to the extent of playing at the highest level is the stuff of dreams. Two stories in the media this week piqued our interest. One reported Mick Malthouse’s thoughts on Ben Cousins’ rumoured regression, and the other dealt with efforts to avoid such -
Wagers of sin
8 Jan 2012 | 5:59 amAussieRulesBlog is staggered by a report in The Age of a punter wagering $18,000 on the Sydney Swans missing the final eight in 2012. Let’s not beat around the bush — this issue of gambling on AFL is becoming a more and more significant one. We’re not wowsers here at AussieRulesBlog Central, but the punt simply isn’t one of our vices. We don’t understand why someone would wager more than 20% -
Video technology bares its fangs
26 Dec 2011 | 5:36 pmThe controversy of the first day of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG is only a controversy because Channel Nein insisted on deploying its technology despite it not being available to either teams or umpires. Test cricket has survived for more than 100 years without high technology assistance. Sure, there were dodgy decisions from time to time, but that was part and parcel of the process. -
Early gong for Tiger
21 Dec 2011 | 7:40 pmAussieRulesBlog was quite surprised to see a small additional item at the end of an unrelated story mentioning that Richmond had awarded life membership to 24-year-old, 150-game player, Brett Deledio. We have nothing against Deledio. In fact, we’re sure he’s a most estimable chap. But life membership? At twenty-four? One wonders what the Tigers’ board are smoking. We could countenance -
Tribunal weasel words
11 Dec 2011 | 12:32 amEach year at this time, the AFL makes its announcement of changes for the following season. The changes for the Tribunal and Match Review Panel for 2012 are remarkable not so much for the “changes” as for the language used. For example: any striking action with a raised forearm or elbow will be classified as intentional, unless there is clear evidence the strike was not intentional;

Grand Final Teams
29 Sep 2011 | 2:11 amCollingwood’s Dayne Beams will be the hard luck story of the Grand Final this week after missing out on a spot in the Pies side with a suspect groin injury. 26 Sep 2011 | 7:50 amCollingwood superstar Dane Swan has posted a record 34 votes to take out the 2011 Brownlow Medal. Hawthorn midfielder Sam Mitchell finished with the second most amount of votes (30) despite being [...] -

22 Sep 2011 | 7:58 pmPowerhouse clubs Hawthorn and Collingwood will meet in a cut-throat final for only the third time in VFL/AFL history. Deck of Dream Team 2012: Andrew Gaff
27 Jan 2012 | 1:00 pmName: Andrew Gaff Club: West Coast Eagles Position: Midfielder Assistant Coach 2012 Price: $322,900 Bye Round: 11 2011 Average: 65.3 2011 Games Played: 14 Predicted Average: 84 Why should I pick him? Because he’s Kermit! Or at least, that’s what his teammates call him, due to being green-vested so regularly over his debut year. Gaff showed us last year that he will be a fantastic fantasy player for years to come, but, due to the sub rule, his first year numbers don’t really reflect that at a glance. On the surface, his season average of 65.3 doesn’t appear so promising. Looking… -
The Barlow Medalist: In Search of the next Mature Aged Rookie Superstar
26 Jan 2012 | 7:30 pmIt appears that just 13 games in 2010 was all it took for Fremantle’s Michael Barlow to drastically change the approach football managers take to AFL draft. For those not familiar with the Barlow story. Michael Barlow was rookie listed by Fremantle after previously trying out for St Kilda and Essendon. Barlow didn’t play TAC Cup as a junior skipping the traditional “talent identification pathway” to play country football. In 2008/9 Barlow played in the VFL for Werribee where he was awarded the Fothergill-Round Medal as the league’s best young player and was runner up in the JJ… -
Deck of Dream Team 2012: Marty Clarke
26 Jan 2012 | 1:00 pmName: Marty Clarke Club: Collingwood Position: Defender Assistant Coach 2012 Price: $141,500 Bye Round: 12 2009 Average: 71.5 2009 Games Played: 12 Predicted Average: 73 Why should I pick him? Marty Clarke is an Irish born super star. Clarke joined Collingwood for the first time in 2007 to only play a limited number of games in his debut season. In 2008 Clarke shone with an average on 71.8 and backed it up the following year to average an impressive 71.5. After 46 games with the Pies, Clarke released he had too many teeth to be associated with the Pies and returned to his homeland 2010/11. In… -
Versus – Round 1: Robinson v Martin
25 Jan 2012 | 11:30 pmWith the generous bestowal of MID/FWD DPP in 2012, these two gents will be among the most popular forward line options for coaches. Effectively having an additional midfielder sitting in your forward line; this appears to be a recipe for success for coaches in the upcoming season. Poised at a similar price with high potential, Robbo and Martin may well be fighting it out in your team for that all important DPP spot. Many will opt for both; or may be considering others like Sidebottom, Beams, Fyfe or Zaharakis. However, it is my belief that these two offer the most upside in what will… -
Deck of Dream Team 2012: Joel Selwood
25 Jan 2012 | 1:00 pmName: Joel Selwood Club: Geelong Position: Midfield Assistant Coach 2012 Price: $540,600 Bye Rounds: R12 2011 Average: 109.2 2011 Games Played: 17 Predicted Average: 117 Why should I pick him? If Jimmy Bartel was the forgotten man of DT 2011, Joel Selwood would have to inherit that title going into DT 2012. Jelwood’s name just doesn’t seem to pop up in fantasy footy chatter as often as GAJ, Swan, Rocky and Barlow, who seem to be the popular early locks for M1-M4 possies. Not surprising though as there is a real depth of quality in midfield stocks with uniques like Murphy, Thommo, Gibbs…

ADELAIDE DAY 4: Groundhog Day
27 Jan 2012 | 4:43 amForgive me if I think this is Groundhog Day. The crowd today look like the leftovers from yesterday. There is a distinctive sign that says “hangover” amongst most of them. It was a big day on Australia Day and I don’t think many of them would remember what happened yesterday. For me personally I [...] -

Canadian Mike Pyke can be seen in the background of the Fox Sports video below and looks like he might rightly be as comfortable with the Rugby League players as with the Swans or his former code of Rugby Union. ... -

Tennis grunters
23 Jan 2012 | 10:48 pmIt about the Tennis Federation curtailed GRUNTERS. Watched 3 minutes of the Gruntapova match last night before turning the TV off the tennis. Came back about 9.15pm only to hear it again. Channel 7 said it was over 90db. Shut them up or ban them. I didn't come back to watch Hewitt. What we need is spectators complaining about lack of Occupational Safety to them. -

Bobby Dazzler FC - Pre-season News!!!
6 Jan 2012 | 3:49 amTraining has resumed down at "Dazzler Park" as the Bobby Dazzler FC sets its self for a massive 2012 season. Approximately 150 players have been invited down to training to battle it out for 30 spots so the competition is pretty hot. The initial squad of 30 players has already been selected, but as per normal I would imagine nearly every name will change come the start of the season. At the momment we have 566K left in the salary cap so theres plenty of room for movement. Off my initial squad here's a small insight: In the backline Goddard @ 584.7K looks destined to lead the defense…
