19 Jan 2012 | 9:32 pmThis afternoon the Geelong Football Club held at a press conference at Skilled Stadium at 2.30pm, to announce their new captain and leadership group for 2012. The new captain of Geelong is Joel Selwood, who will be replacing former skipper Cameron Ling, who retired after Geelong’s premeiership last year. Selwood has always been the favourite for this position, and was the Cats vice-captain in season 2011. Since his debut in 2007, Selwood has played a total of 114 games in his 4 seasons for the Cats and has kicked 48 goals. Throughout his short, yet illustrious career thus far, he has won… -

Jonathan Patton – Number 1 Draft Pick 2011
24 Nov 2011 | 2:20 amEvery year we seem to say this but the worst kept secret in AFL is finally out in the open as Jonathan Patton was selected first in the 2011 AFL Draft. Patton is easily the most dominant forward who will get selected from the 2011 draft. Some of the attributes that saw him picked first are as follows: His good hands/judgement His consistent goal kicking For a big man he is great at ground level Fast and fit for a key forward Times his leads as well as anyone GWS should be able to build a forward line around Patton and he is a deserved number 1 pick.

KP’s Big Issue – Preparing For Byes & My Plan Ahead
15 May 2012 | 6:23 pmThe bye rounds (11, 12 and 13) are fast approaching, and it’s time to start asking yourself how you’ll go about tackling them. I spoke to Toby and Jim about this last night and both of those boys are fairly adamant about making sure you have cover through the byes to avoid as many ‘donuts’ as possible. I’m of the opposite opinion, and it is sure to be a heated discussion on the panel this week! I’ve sat down for hours trying to think of strategies that will give my team the edge and quite frankly; - It’s a headache. - It’s a waste of time. - It’s a waste of trades. -… -

15 May 2012 | 6:01 pmJACOB BRENNAN (West Coast Eagles, DEF) AFL Dream Team $104,200 Scores: 31, 66 Avg: 48.5 BE: -27 SuperCoach $113,200 Scores: 47, 84 Avg: 65.5 BE: -64 The Son of Monkey hasn’t looked out of place in his first two games in the AFL. The medium sized defender reads the play well & has a good appetite for the contest. However, you have to wonder if he wasn’t playing in a team that structures up so well if he would have the freedom to play the role he is playing. On the other hand he has managed to crack it for a game in a top of the ladder side, so well done to the chimp! -
Winners & Weiners: Rd.7

Below is Part 1 – part 2 will come after the Carlton vs Saints game on Monday night. Melbourne vs Hawthorn: Melbourne: Winner: James Magner was one of the most traded out players this week, so it was nice for those who held onto him to see him put together a pretty handy score. He is still playing a tagging role and I really can’t see him cracking the ton too many more times this year, but still, he seems to have plenty of cash… -

AFL 2012 Round 7 Wrap Up
15 May 2012 | 5:12 pmHawthorn defeat Melbourne Melbourne 6.13 (49) vs Hawthorn 15.25 (115) Next Round: Sydney v Melbourne, Hawthorn v Fremantle It was to be expected the Hawks crushing the Dees but a continuing sticking point for Hawthorn is their wastefulness in front of goals. Buddy Franklin personified this with his 3 goals 7 points and talent alone cannot get the Hawks over the line. Liam Shiels was the Hawk’s best and Sam Mitchell battled hard all game. Mitch Clarke kicked 3 goals for Melbourne, but time and time again the Demons really struggled to penetrate into their forward 50. -
Monday Night Football is Best for School Holidays
14 May 2012 | 8:45 pmSt Kilda defeats Carlton on a Monday night game & I think maybe we should play more Monday Night games Last night we had the St Kilda/ Carlton Monday night game and from a non-Victorian point of view I enjoyed it and I can only assume everyone in footy mad Melbourne enjoyed it. AFL 2012 Round 5 Wrap Up
30 Apr 2012 | 5:36 pmCollingwood defeat Essendon Collingwood 11.14 (80) vs Essendon 11.13 (79) Next Round: Western Bulldogs v Collingwood, Essendon v Brisbane A clash that was worthy of its standalone fixture on ANZAC Day. The Pies just got there against the Dons by the slimmest of margins. Dane Swan was outstanding for his 42 possessions and 3 goals in the black and white. Collingwood had pretty much led at every change but the Dons rallied to put on 3 consecutive goals to get oh so close. For Essendon, Alwyn Davey kicked 3 majors including one that levelled the scores late in the final…

Is the AFL learning?
10 May 2012 | 7:23 amMost will recall the announcement from the AFL that “the head is sacrosanct” — another in the line of zero-tolerance responses that to some degree failed because they didn’t acknowledge circumstance, nuance and context. This week there was the first explicit acknowledgement that AussieRulesBlog can recall that the zero-tolerance approach to high contact was a mistake. Jeff Gieschen tells the -
(Sniff) It’s not (sniff) fair!
1 May 2012 | 9:25 amHere we are, approaching Round 6. We have an eighteen-team competition staged over twenty-four weeks. And eighteen — OK, for the purists, seventeen — doesn’t go into twenty-four. Yes folks, it’s now official. The AFL’s fixture is unbalanced and some come out of it better than others. Alistair Clarkson has confirmed our worst fears — the Hawks have had a really tough start to the year and will -
Anderson’s video obsession
1 May 2012 | 8:50 amTomorrow morning’s meeting between Vlad and Adrian Anderson should be stirring stuff. AussieRulesBlog is rather glad we’re not in Anderson’s shoes. Coach’s whine spawns tweet abuse
27 Apr 2012 | 6:13 amLet’s not beat around the bush. Brett Ratten’s whining about Sam Lonergan’s “drive” tackle has presumably provided some less-principled Blues supporters with some sort of de facto justification for their tweeted threats against Lonergan. AussieRulesBlog understands that coaches are emotional after a game, particularly a loss when a win was presumed. Nevertheless, in the world of instant -
The Emperor’s new clothes
26 Apr 2012 | 9:27 pm“The feedback [on the video review system]so far has been very positive” according to Adrian Anderson. Winderlich update
15 May 2012 | 1:29 amBomber Jason Winderlich has endured a difficult road to recovery over the past twelve months after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in round four of the 2011 home and away season. Winderlich played one match this year during the NAB Cup, but is now in the process of recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained last month. This latest setback is expected to delay his return for an additional four to six weeks. Essendon is adamant they will not rush Winderlich back into the side until his body is ready, despite the fact that his progress has been slower than expected. Working with… -
No Round Eight for Cooney
15 May 2012 | 1:28 amBulldog Adam Cooney was missing from the midfield last weekend against the Kangaroos after experiencing swelling in his knee late last week. Unfortunately, he is expected to miss another match when the Dogs meet the Suns in the Round Eight clash this weekend. As his recovery continues, the club hopes resting him another week will mean he is fit to return next week against the Cats. While his teammates make the journey to Darwin for the match on Sunday, Cooney will undergo treatment to reduce the swelling. However, he won’t be the only Bulldog spending this weekend in the sidelines. Tom… -
Walker gets two weeks for tackle
15 May 2012 | 1:28 amCrow Taylor Walker has received a two match ban for a sling-tackle on Cat Harry Taylor during Adelaide’s fifty point win over Geelong on Saturday afternoon. Although the Geelong Football Club didn’t believe the tackle was of medium impact, it chose not to appeal the decision. If unsuccessful, Walker could have faced a harsher penalty of three weeks and the Cats were not willing to take the risk. Meanwhile, teammate Joel Corey was hit with a $900 sanction. Corey has accepted the fine as punishment for an obscene gesture he made during the match on Saturday. -
Bartel and Fisher late withdrawals
11 May 2012 | 1:46 amOn Thursday night Jimmy Bartel was named as a certain starter for the Cats when they meet the Crows on Saturday, after sustaining an ankle injury last weekend. However, it was announced today that Bartel is a late withdrawal from the Geelong team. The Cats have named emergency players as Shannon Byrnes, Tom Gillies, and George Horlin-Smith, with one of them expected to take Bartel’s place. Sam Fisher was selected in the Saints team to play against the Blues on Monday afternoon. Fisher has been recovering from a hamstring injury from last weekend. Today St Kilda made a decision that it… -
Return of three Suns
11 May 2012 | 1:44 amGold Coast will see the return of three players this Saturday with captain Gary Ablett, David Swallow and Michael Rischitelli all training strongly this morning. Ablett is likely to play in the forward-line for the Suns giving his teammates a chance to enhance their performance in the midfield. Ablett has missed the last two games due to a knee injury, but will be a welcome addition to the Sun’s line-up against Greater Western Sydney in Canberra. David Swallow didn’t training on Wednesday, however he made up for it this morning and is set to return after recovering from an ankle…

Beasts From The East – R7 Review
16 May 2012 | 5:39 amBeasts From The East Update In 1991 I received a phone call from my Under 16’s Cricket coach. “Stuey, its Crackers here mate. Adam and Luke (our two gun players) have been suspended at school and can’t play tomorrow. I need you to open the batting and bowling tomorrow.” Holy sh*t, this was my first experience with pressure. Winning the toss was my peak performance for the day. Padding up I started getting what I thought were butterflies. A solid if not fluent Number 7 bat, my day usually consisted of 6 steamed dim-sims, a pie with sauce and two orange Lucozades… -
Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 8

Pretty solid (excluding old Rocky there) but the best thing about it is the order is pretty much on the money. Yeah I know I don’t have Boyd in there for his massive 162pts, but you’d have to be pretty happy with any of those top 3 for your #1 job. Grand Final Re-Match This Friday night we will witness a massive match in DT for the week. This match could hold the key to your success over the weekend and it has some of the… -

Chook’s Rooks – Round 7
15 May 2012 | 3:00 pmThree-or-more gamers Man, hang around a little longer Did you hear about the long-time Man City fans who, having stuck by their often-beleaguered Blues/Citizens for the best part of 50 success-starved years, left the stadium in tears with just a few minutes remaining in the final game of the English Premier League season when it appeared that Manchester United would pinch the title, and as a result missed the club’s two injury-time goals and one of the most amazing comebacks in world sport? As someone who sold Greater Western Sydney midfielder Stephen Coniglio two weeks ago, I feel their… -

Cash Cow Bargains
13 May 2012 | 8:03 pmMany first year players play full games and therefore rack up points but some sit on the bench too long in the red jacket. Buy them after their 3rd game as they stay down in price. Darren Pfeiffer ( Port ) & Dayne Zorko ( Bris ) will now get games as their clubs must give them a go. Also Alex Sexton ( Gold Coast ) after last weeks effort. Watch for Rory Taggert ( Melb ) who has recovered from injury & played for Casey on saturday. Will be in Melbournes side within 2 weeks. Adelaide have a BIG recruit in Josh Jenkins who played first game against Geelong. Looked good but as forward is… -

Best Buys: On The Bubble
15 May 2012 | 9:05 pmWelcome once again to the Best Buys This week sees a fair few rookie options on the bubble, and for those who resisted the double-downgrade last week, some decent opportunites to get in some fresh meat. Defense in particular has a few guys worth looking at, which with some of the defensive cash-cows already getting close to their peak it is perfectly timed. For those that did opt for the double-downgrade this week sees the ideal time to bring a couple of heavy-hitters to replenish the premium stocks and hopefully get that nice points boost that we’re all looking for. My tip for the week… -

ORFFL Round 7 Review
14 May 2012 | 10:55 pmOh yeah, intro, into…It was the best of times, it was the bleurghst of times. That was Round 7 of the ORFFL alright. Read over. COULTA COULDABEENS 1243 Def TARWIN LOWER PIGS 1132 There was something of a snafu with the team lists, but nothing snafuish about the Couldabeens performance; Coulta defeating Tarwin Lower by an awesome 111 points (I like palindromic numbers). Zaharakis (130) and Reilly (120) played well in demolitions, and the Port Adelaide midfield duo of Ebert (109) and McCarthy (105) lifted for their fantasy coach when their teammates could not. The win also sees them… -
2012 Round Review: Round 7
14 May 2012 | 2:45 amHey hey! Finally the SC Gods are back on side with some big scores going up around the place. Reckon 2300 is gunna be par (Which coincidently enough, is what I’m on track for in both SC and DT!) Melbourne vs Hawthorn Result: Hawthorn by 66, 15.25.115 to 6.13.59 I try to imagine what was going on in the media room at the AFL when they were trying to bill this one up as a big Friday night clash. Seemed the best they could come up with was- Let’s see if the Dees can prevent the inevitable stomping that they are going to recieve. Turns out they sort of did. Lost by 11 goals, but… -
Runci’s Top Corner: EPL Preview GW38
12 May 2012 | 11:36 pmWhat a season! What a finish! 1 game to go and yet there is still five games with something to play for. There’s a lot of questions needing answering tonight. Can City win their first title since 1968? Or will Hughes do his (other) old club a favour and take immeasurable delight in robbing his nemesis of glory? Will Spurs players come down with food poisoning before a last day fight for CL qualificaiton …. again? Who’s the greatest miracle worker at Wigan? Martinez or Moses? Dunno about anyone else but I’ve got my stash of Red Bull at the ready. It all kicks off at…
